  • Semapedia is a project that seeks to combine the physical annotation technology of semacode with information from Wikipedia, a free and editable encyclopaedia on the internet. The goal of the Semapedia is to connect the virtual and physical world by bringing information from the internet to the relevant places in the physical space. This is done by tagging physical places using semacode.

Semacode works by embedding a web link (URL) into a sort of two-dimensional black and white barcode which constitutes the tag. The tag can be read using a mobile camera phone supported by the Semacode Software Development Kit. This software is capable of detecting and decoding the tag and extracting the URL, thereby sending the user to the web link using the phone’s built-in browser. In short, the idea is to find a Wikipedia article, create a Semapedia tag, print it, and attach it to the corresponding physical site.

Check out an example of how the Semapedia works, and have a look at Semapedia Tags placed in the physical world.

[...] Tagtracker is created by Someth;ng and in many ways resembles the Semapedia project previously presented on Digital Experience. However, the people behind Tagtracker focus on encouraging users to tag their own territory such as their office, t-shirt, business card, etc. Using Tagtracker the internet becomes a geographic, physical-world based resource. Discover communities local to your regular haunts, discover resources by taking a stroll, join in with groups you have physical contact with, or email people you see in the street. [...]
